How Red Cross Gave Aid In "Flu", Epidemic

• The Red Cross House, East Ave. and Alexander St., is noted to have been “practically turned over” to the Emergency Aid Committee and that all facilities of the Red Cross in Rochester were put to use to combat influenza during the epidemic• The Red Cross enlisted paid and volunteer nurses, established and equipped emergency some half a dozen emergency hospitals, helped cover the community through a system involving the Red Cross Motor Corps, and opened kitchens to supply food to hospitals and families through its canteen service• The Red Cross registered and used 826 nurses; 130 of these were paid; 30 were female graduate nurses, 3 male graduate nurses, 42 practical nurses, 16 first aid nurses, 671 female volunteer aids, and 64 male volunteer aids• The War Service Corps, Boy Scouts, Rochester Automobile Club, Eastman Kodak Company, Stromberg-Carlson Mfg. Co., Rochester Railway and Light Company, Taylor Instrument Companies, Bastian Brothers Company, Bell Telephone Company, and Sibly, Lindsay, and Curr Company, along with other organizations and individuals, are noted to have aided the Red Cross chapter• Expenditures of up to $10,000 were incurred by the Red Cross for drugs, medicines, sick room supplies, beds, cots, bedding, food, and other provisions• Transportation work was done by the Red Cross Women’s Motor Corps and the volunteer service of the Automobile Club• The Red Cross Canteen Service, with the cooperation of the Mechanics Institute and the Odenbach Restaurant, furnished cooked food to nurses on cases and to the Red Cross Houses, the Y.W.C.A. Hospital, the Baden Street Settlement, the Lewis Street Hospital, the Charles House Hospital, the Emergency Home, the Armory Hospital, the Gannett House, as well as to individual families; the main supplies for this were acquired through the Mechanics Institutes from its supply department and were charged to the Red Cross at cost; Leiut. James, operating from the Y.W.C.A., purchased supplies for the Y.W.C.A., Lewis Street, the Armory, and the Gannett House; at the Gannett House, the Baden Street House, the Lewis Street House, th Armory, and the Y.W.C.A., 12,491 meals were served as of Nov. 1 to 5,017 patients; the help consisted of 16 paid staff members and 169 volunteers; lunch was served to volunteers at the Red Cross House; broth was sent to sufferers in various parts of the city by automobileNewspaper article1
